Home and Education Support Visits

Support visits may be advised as part of a child’s therapeutic support package.

It may be advised that the therapist visit your child either at home or at their school, nursery or college to provide targeted support for goals relating to these settings.

Home Visits

A home visit may be identified to be beneficial to:

    • Troubleshoot a daily task; The time of the visit would be planned to allow the therapist to observe the child at the time of day they experience as challenging (e.g. getting ready in the morning, a family mealtime, or playing in the garden).
    • Develop a Sensory Diet programme tailored to your home environment and advise on how to create a regulating environment in your home.
    • Work with other professionals supporting your child such as home-school tutors or other therapists.

Education Visits

Support in schools, nurseries, pre-school, colleges or home school groups may include:

  • Observations to further explore and understand the reasons for a child’s difficulties to inform the focus of therapy sessions.
  • Advice and guidance on environmental adaptations suited to reduce the sensory demands on a child.
  • Training the teacher and/or learning support assistant on the implementation of an Occupational Therapy programme or Sensory Diet.
  • Liaison with key staff, provide education related to your child’s needs to develop an action plan for in school support.
  • Exploration of your child’s timetable, therapeutic spaces, and equipment available within the school that could be used to implement a sensory diet programme.
  • Trial equipment such as pencil grips, adapted seating and writing slopes.
