Daily Living Skills

Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) and Instrumental ADL's

Living life your way!

Daily living skills sessions work on ADL’s and IADL’s through skill building and adaptations to achieve independance and/or interdependence in tasks.

Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) meet our basic needs such as personal care, dressing, eating and using the toilet.

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL’s) are more complex tasks such as making a purchase, travelling and preparing a meal.

I'm so impressed with this, it tastes better than heaven!

Live & Love it’s Life Skills Questionnaire asks young people to indicate what type of support they need with a range of daily tasks (physical, verbal prompts, visual prompts etc.) and then to rate their satisfaction with their performance on each of the tasks.

Daily Living Skills sessions provide therapeutic support to improve their satisfaction in activities that they identify they would like to work on. This may be by developing skills required to carry out the activity and also by identifying modifications to the tasks that make is easier to perform.

Sessions last 1.5 hours and take place at our studio (to include the young person being involved in the related set up and pack down).

Examples of session focus:

  • Cooking & associated cleaning.
  • Using public transport.
  • Making a purchase in a shop.
  • Handling money.
  • Executive function strategies that are transferable to other tasks grounded in practice using tasks that are motivating to them.

Environmental Support Session

A visit to an environment that a child/young person accesses to identify supporting factors and areas of need relevant to their goals. Observation and liaison with the child or young persons support network.

Equipment

Identifying equipment/gadgets to enable a child or young person to complete an activity in the most efficient and satisfying way.
